John Witzel Walters is a self-taught Artist from South Carolina who uses acrylic on canvas to evoke thought and emotion through his dramatic art that takes colorful risks. Witzel’s art has been influenced by the eccentric life he has led, surviving both a ship sinking while working as a scuba diver in the Caribbean (2008) and the Georgetown Front Street Fires (2013) where he lost his home, art business and beloved dog in the flames. His artwork exposes both his love of the Lowcountry, his Southern roots, and the vibrant colors of the underwater Caribbean.
An award winning Artist, he has been featured in several magazines and newspapers, as well as winning the 2012 Arts International Competition and the 2013 and 2015 Pawleys Island Festival of Music and Art Poster Contests.
The textures, vibrant colors and dominant brushstrokes reflected in Witzel Art are inspired from the Artist’s love of everything Southern. Witzel feels, “The South is character-filled and hauntingly romantic.” This view inspires his Southern themed paintings, reflective of his love of the natural world. Unafraid to take risks, the Artist aims to create something surprising yet playful for the viewer to enjoy with wonder.
